What is School Council?

The School Council at John Mahood is intended to be a representative  group of parents/guardians, community members, and staff representatives including the principal.  Council meets most months during the school year and works closely with the principal, teachers and support staff at John Mahood Public School, the Waterloo Region District School Board and the Ministry of Education to share information and provide parent input to school programs and activities.  They are also responsible for fundraising that brings important enhancements to the school.

What School Council is not?

School Council is not a forum for parents to discuss personal issues regarding their children.  Your child’s teacher and/or the principal are the appropriate contacts for discussions of this nature.

What are the Initiatives of School Council?

John Mahood School Council has adopted three initiatives which guide us through each school year: Site Improvement: this encompasses physical improvement in or outside the school such as playground upgrades, grounds beautification or provision of equipment. Community Building: this includes anything that encourages compassion, building “bridges” with others in the school community, improving school spirit (climate, character traits, bullying) and welcoming new families. Student Achievement: this includes anything that supports academics, such as guest speakers, purchasing of library and home reading books, technology or other tools to assist students in their academic pursuits.

When and Where are School Council Meetings?

Council meetings are currently held virtually on the fourth Monday of the month starting at 7:00 p.m.  This is subject to change.   Please email jma-schoolcouncil@wrdsb.ca if you would like to be sent a link for the meeting.

Why Should I Get Involved With School Council?

Getting involved in the John Mahood community is a great way to keep informed.  In fact, research shows that parental involvement in a child’s school is a major factor in student achievement.  As well, by becoming involved in School Council, you get to see first-hand the difference you can make in the school community.  Even if you choose not be become a voting member of council, you can be involved in participating in committees or volunteering to assist with council activities.

Who Can Attend School Council Meetings?

All parents and guardians are welcome to attend the meetings whether they are voting members or not.  Everyone can contribute thoughts and ideas regarding the agenda items, and can share suggestions with the Chairperson for future agenda items.  No experience is necessary and you can participate as much or as little as you choose.
