Gardening for the Future
Posted June 4, 2021
For the past couple of years, the John Mahood community has been working with NGOs towards reimagining our school yard. We strive to increase biodiversity and sustainability by building an Indigenous food garden, rain gardens and extensions to our pollinator gardens.
Through the construction of pathways to various outdoor learning areas, improved shade and connections to the adjacent forest, we aspire to ignite a sense of wonder and hope in students through meaningful, experiential, learning experiences.
In light of the recent uncovering of children’s remains found at a Kamloops Indian Residential School, it becomes more pressing that we learn about our history, including the history of the land and the Indigenous Peoples who have lived here since time immemorial. Our gardens and schoolyard are creating opportunities for developing meaningful relationships with each other and with the land while learning more about Indigenous ways of knowing. By working together to care for and heal the land, we motivate our future change-makers, grounding them in responsible practices intended to restore and sustain the natural world.
We can do something to make a difference. Please vote for our Outdoor Learning Project and be a part of the CHANGE. Click here to vote between June 1 and 15th. http://wshe.es/lVsijwIB
